AMOR artisans are extraordinarily talented, low-income women living in Chiapas, Mexico.
Our project aims to address socioeconomic problems facing artisan communities. For the majority of artisans, work is only seasonal and dependent on tourism. Due to these meager seasonal earnings, the next generation of artisans is abandoning their cultural arts in search of new sources of income. This takes them on dangerous journeys far away from their homes in return for hard labor on farms and factories below fair-trade wages. This results in the loss of culturally significant techniques, great personal risk for each artisan, and no way to improve their quality of life or economic situation.
To tackle these issues, every sale at AMOR provides artisan women with sustainable local employment. With AMOR, they can work from the safety of their homes and not worry about when or where they can sell their wares. We pay them before they even begin to work because their financial security comes first. We hope to preserve their arts and create a brighter, safer future for their families and culture.
CONCEPT
AMOR Handmade is modern style inspired by Mexican handmade arts. Some of the techniques used to create our products originated thousands of years ago with the Maya civilization. This connection can be evidenced in the language our artisans speak, "Tsotsil", a dialect of the Maya language. We fell in love with their vibrant, mesmerizing designs and we felt that the world needed to be introduced to these humble artisans. As aficionados of art and culture, we created AMOR to share their work on the global stage and integrate their designs into our lives. We hope you'll fall in love just as we did.
SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
We pay the artisans their asking price or better upfront so they can earn a livable and fair wage. We must respect each artisan and her talents if we wish to preserve their arts for future generations. We set fair prices for the customer so there is equality at each end of the supply chain. Our products use environmentally-friendly materials such as vegetable-tanned leather and biodegradable packaging.
