We work with artisans skilled in ancient Maya weaving techniques to give you fashionable, handmade products with cultural heritage.
The artisans of AMOR are extraordinarily talented, low-income women living in Chiapas, Mexico. Every sale supports them with steady local employment. This empowers them to create a brighter future for their families and culture.
AMOR Handmade is modern style inspired by Mexican handmade arts. The techniques used to create our products originated thousands of years ago with the Maya civilization. This connection can be evidenced in the language our artisans speak, "Tsotsil", a dialect evolved from the Maya language. Despite their ancient nature, the designs and colors of their textiles marvel any modern day observer. As Los Angeles-based product designers, we knew that these beautiful and culturally significant designs could be so much more. The world needed to be introduced to these humble artisans. We created AMOR to share their work on the global stage and integrate their designs into our lives.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The modest craftswomen that work with us speak with their hands. Their techniques are know-how handed down from mother to daughter generation after generation. To create one dog collar textile, it takes approximately 4 to 7 hours. Unfortunately, the bulk of their sales comes from the tourist market, which favors bargaining and low prices. In the end, their earnings put them well below the poverty line. For this reason, we pay the artisans their asking price or better. We must respect their talents and work if we wish to preserve their arts for future generations. We also put a lot of thought into setting fair prices for the customer, so that there may be equality at each end of the supply chain. We hope that AMOR can grow into a happy, healthy ecosystem that benefits each participating member ❤️
